ROGER CORMAN WEEK - Feb 6 to 12

Who is Roger Corman?

Born on April 5, 1962, Roger William Corman would grow up to be an incredibly influential force in the American film industry, producing over 300 films and directing over 50.  Originally intending to follow after his father, Corman obtained an industrial engineering degree from Stanford University.  His career in engineering, however, did not last long.  Corman began producing and writing in 1953 and started directing in 1955 with the film Swamp Women.  Many well known actors, such as Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro, as well as Directors, such as Martin
Scorsese and James Cameron, would get there starts working on Roger Corman films.
Throughout his career, Corman has been known largely for low budget, cheesy B movies, often involving somewhat ridiculous and questionably crafted creatures.  Examples are abounding, such as 1957's Attack of the Crab Monsters and 2010's Dinoshark.  On a similar note, a number of Corman's films could loosely be called knock offs of already popular films.  Carnosaur, a Corman film from 1993, was seemingly his twisted, low budget take on Jurassic Park.  1982's Forbidden World (aka Mutant) happens to be a particularly entertaining and sleazy version of Ridley Scott’s film Alien.
Corman would eventually receive an Academy Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his lifetime of work.  Take some time and enjoy some of the Roger Corman  films available here, or elsewhere for that matter, and enjoy some of the work created during this film legend's illustrious career.
